Four extra UN helicopters arrived in Burma from Bangkok over the weekend and flew their first flights over the worst hit areas of the delta on Monday. Previously the WFP had just one helicopter servicing the entire delta region.

Some schools across the cyclone ravaged area of the Irrwaddy delta have reopened but are facing a range of problems. With the relief effort still continuing, survivors have bigger concerns than sending their children to school at the moment. Many parents also face prohibitive costs in sending their children to school as textbooks and clothing are far too expensive.

According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairsx spokesman Richard Horsey, only a small fraction of the cyclone survivors have been reached by international aid. Although a million have been reached, Horsey pointed out that this did not mean that those people did not need further assistance.
